The East Sussex Carers Card has three functions:

  • Identifies you as a carer in an emergency
  • Emergency Respite plan (the CRESS card)
  • A discount card

Emergency Respite

As an unpaid carer you might worry about what would happen to the person you care for if you had an accident or were suddenly taken ill. The East Sussex Carers Card enables you to set up a CRESS (Carers Respite Emergency Support Service) plan as part of your Carer’s Assessment. This includes contact details for up to three people who could provide short-term support in an emergency.

You will have the East Sussex Carers Card to carry with you, so that in an emergency, you or someone else can call the number on the card. When this happens, East Sussex County Council will contact the people you have named in your emergency plan.

If none of your contacts are available, or if there are no other people you can identify to act as an emergency contact, Adult Social Care will provide support to look after the person you care for. This card is available to unpaid carers of adults.

Care for the Carers can help you to set up a CRESS plan if you do not want a Carer’s Assessment.

The CRESS card also gives you access to the discounts detailed below – you don’t need a separate card.

To find out more and to apply for a CRESS card, call Health and Social Care Connect on 0345 60 80 191. Your Carers Card will also include the discount card which is described below

Please note that older versions of the emergency alert card are still valid to be used to access the Carers Card discounts available.

Update June 2019:

Have you received a new CRESS card in the post recently? If you have questions about your new card, please call Health and Social Care Connect on 0345 60 80 191.
