Care for the Carers highlights unpaid carers after being awarded runner up in its category at the 2018Small Charity, Big Impact Awards.

Last week a small group from Care for the Carers travelled to London to attend the Small Charity, Big Impact awards, and collect our runner up award. As part of being recognised with the award, we had the opportunity to record a short video explaining the work we do and the impact we have on unpaid carers in East Sussex.

It’s a significant achievement for us to have that level of recognition, and for us to feel validated for the work that we do and the impact this has had on the carers we work with, says Kat Matthews, Senior Carer Support Worker at Care for the Carers.

Making the shortlist out of 362 charities

I had a lovely day filming, and attending the awards ceremony. I was so proud that we were in the Top 15 out of 362 charities that applied for the ‘Small Charity, Big Impact’ awards! It’s such an achievement, especially as we were the only charity there from the whole of Sussex, West Sussex and Brighton and Hove, says Kat.

We also invited Meena, one of the carers we have been able to support in the county, to join us for the day and share her experience as an unpaid carer for her partner, who has multiple sclerosis. She attended the award ceremony and filming, to represent the 65,000+ carers in the area. You can see more about Meena’s caring experience in this video:

Jennifer Twist, Chief Executive Officer of Care for the Carers, also attended the event alongside Kat and Meena: Watching the videos of the five winning charities, it’s clear there’s some phenomenal work going on across the country, including with people who are struggling with suicidal thoughts, victims of sexual abuse, and support for families struggling with their children, as well as international support for communities in India and Africa, Jennifer says. A big congratulations to all the winners and runners up. It was true honour to be a part of this occasion… and next year we aim to win! says Kat.
