Popular podiatrist sprints around Sussex in aid of Care for the Carers
13 March 2018
James Wright, son of Philip Wright, one of Eastbourne’s longest-standing podiatrists, is lacing up his trainers and slipping on his airtex running vest to take on the tough Hastings Half Marathon in aid of East Sussex charity Care for the Carers this Sunday.
Podiatrist James, who works at Podiamed Ltd in Eastbourne and Seaford, will be putting his trotters to the test in the Hastings Half Marathon, to support the 65,000+ unpaid carers across East Sussex, 9,000 of whom live in Hastings.
“”In my job I see a lot of carers, people who are looking after their partner who has fallen ill, for example. I’m supporting this very good cause as we need to raise awareness about people in these situations,” says James.
After the Hastings Half, James will continue his training in preparation for tackling his first full marathon in Brighton on 15th April. Taking in some of East Sussex’s finest scenery, James practises for the challenge on Beachy Head and in Friston Forest. “If you like hills then the best place to run is Seven Sisters, and also Birling Gap – if you don’t mind loads of wind in your face!” says James.
Alongside Care for the Carers staff, James’s brother, sister and wife will be at both runs to cheer him on. He’ll be running solo but thinks he might bump into – and maybe even overtake! – some of his former running pals from the Eastbourne Rovers Athletic Club, with whom he used to run regularly. “I’ve mentioned my fundraising run to many of my patients, so hopefully some of them will be there cheering from the sidelines, too!” he says.
Care for the Carers Chief Executive, Jennifer Twist, says, “We are delighted that James has chosen to run for Care for the Carers, and highlight this incredibly important cause. With cuts to services for unpaid carers we are relying now, more than ever, on individuals to support us – to raise awareness, and funds, so that our valuable work can continue and we can reach the carers who need us.”
